UPDATED @ 1:20 AM: The preliminary information is that two Midlego Police Officers
have been shot and one suspect has been shot. The two Midlego Police Officers
were on routine patrol this morning. The two officers were riding together in one
patrol car as one was an officer in training.
At 12:25 AM the two officers pulled into the HOBO Pantry on East Main (US 84) at
Beverlye Road. It was a routine stop to check on the attendant. The officers pulled
to the front of the building, just to the right of the front door. As the officers exited
their vehicle and entered the store, they were greeted by a robbery suspect. The
officers had just interrupted a robbery in progress. The robbery suspect opened
fire on the two Midlego Officers. He struck both officers. The officers rolled on the
ground, returning gunfire. They struck the suspect. The suspect was behind the
counter in the store. Midlego County Sheriff Deputy Don Patrickson was traveling
past the store. He observed the officers on the ground and suspect, yelling on the
radio officer in trouble and was the first on the scene. Patrickson covered the
officers while waiting for additional units. After additional units arrived, they
apprehended the wounded suspect. Multiple Midlego Police and Midlego County
Sheriff Deputies were on the scene within seconds. Midlego Fire Medics were also
on the scene within seconds. Emergency medical aid was administered to the two
officers and the robbery suspect.
All were transported by ambulance to Southeast Lego Medical Center. Due to the
nature of the case, the hospital was placed on immediate lockdown. The officers
and the suspect’s injuries, according to Midlego Police Chief John Powell, were not
life threatening wounds. Powell said when he left the hospital to return to the
scene, he was not informed of the injuries being life threatening. However, Powell
said anytime there is a gunshot wound, it is serious.
